Donald held Danielle against his chest while I closed my fist around the memory card until its hard plastic edge pressed painfully into my palm.<\/p>\n<p>Agustin stepped backward and lowered his voice. \u201cDon\u2019t use the rear door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou just told us to,\u201d Donald whispered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone\u2019s covering it now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As if to confirm his warning, a beam of white light swept across the frosted glass beside the back entrance. It disappeared, returned, then moved slowly downward. Whoever stood outside wasn\u2019t searching blindly. It scraped across the concrete, revealing a rectangular outline in the wall.<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>A narrow metal door had been painted the same gray as the foundation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long have you known about this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel worked at a rusted latch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince before you moved in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald laughed once, without humor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The latch refused to move.<\/p>\n<p>Agustin pushed Rachel aside, braced his shoulder against the door and forced it open.<\/p>\n<p>Cold, damp air entered.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond it stretched a narrow concrete passage.<\/p>\n<p>Danielle whispered, \u201cWhere does it go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel answered. \u201cThe old detached garage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t have a detached garage,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Agustin switched on a small flashlight. \u201cThe structure was demolished, but the access tunnel connected to a utility building behind the neighboring property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew this was here too?\u201d Donald asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI used it when I was seventeen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald stared at the brother he had learned existed less than an hour earlier.<\/p>\n<p>I couldn\u2019t imagine what that sentence did to him. There would be time for the devastation later, if we survived long enough to have a later.<\/p>\n<p>A thump sounded overhead.<\/p>\n<p>Then Dr. Mercer\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She flinched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know how this ends,\u201d he called.<\/p>\n<p>Agustin motioned us into the passage.<\/p>\n<p>Danielle went first between Donald and me.<\/p>\n<p>I was about to enter when Rachel grabbed my sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive me the card.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I recoiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbsolutely not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMadison, listen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they catch us, they search you first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy wouldn\u2019t they search you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Mercer thinks I\u2019m still afraid of him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Agustin gave a quiet, contemptuous laugh.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet me carry it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I studied her.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-four hours earlier I might have handed her anything she asked for. She had been family. She had cared for Danielle. Water dripped somewhere ahead. The air smelled of soil, rust and stagnant concrete.<\/p>\n<p>Donald kept one hand on Danielle\u2019s shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>I walked behind her.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel followed me.<\/p>\n<p>Agustin brought up the rear.<\/p>\n<p>After perhaps thirty yards, the tunnel divided.<\/p>\n<p>Agustin stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis wasn\u2019t here before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel moved past him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, it was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He aimed the flashlight at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFather had it extended after you left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Donald\u2019s patience finally snapped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop doing that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery time somebody asks you something important, you decide whether we deserve the truth. Stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s shoulders lowered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe left branch goes toward the old utility building. The right goes beneath the property behind ours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose property?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMercer\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The tunnel seemed to become colder.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her. \u201cDr. Mercer owns the house behind us?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough a company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you never thought that was worth mentioning?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know until three years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe same time you learned our house was bugged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pieces were beginning to align.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer hadn\u2019t merely monitored my health through appointments. I know Madison\u2019s father was dead before sunrise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Agustin\u2019s expression became dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel began crying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew enough to be afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sirens grew louder.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine looked through a crack in the shed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have maybe three minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore Mercer realizes the card isn\u2019t in the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward the tunnel.<\/p>\n<p>The second archive was beneath his property.<\/p>\n<p>It might contain proof of my father\u2019s murder.<\/p>\n<p>Donald saw the decision forming.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t leave it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can come back with police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elaine shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce Mercer knows you found the first card, the second archive will be destroyed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald looked toward the approaching police lights, then toward Danielle.<\/p>\n<p>I understood his choice before he spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m taking Danielle out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He seemed surprised I agreed so quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice first,\u201d I said. \u201cGet her somewhere safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to know what happened to my father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I need my wife alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I touched his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen help me make sure this doesn\u2019t survive another generation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He closed his eyes briefly.<\/p>\n<p>When he opened them, anger had given way to something steadier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m coming with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDonald\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDanielle goes with Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at her for a long moment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I trust you with my daughter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question devastated her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald didn\u2019t soften.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf anything happens to her\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Danielle hugged me tightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want you to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandpa hid those things for you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pulled back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen bring them back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I kissed her forehead.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel took her hand.<\/p>\n<p>Outside, blue lights reflected through the rain.<\/p>\n<p>Agustin opened the hatch.<\/p>\n<p>Donald looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know the way?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Agustin nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine corrected him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We descended again.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel and Danielle remained above to meet the police.<\/p>\n<p>At the tunnel junction, Elaine turned right.<\/p>\n<p>We followed.<\/p>\n<p>After several minutes she stopped beside a section of wall that looked no different from the rest.<\/p>\n<p>She pressed against a concrete block.<\/p>\n<p>A hidden panel shifted inward.<\/p>\n<p>Behind it was a small room.<\/p>\n<p>Metal shelving lined the walls.<\/p>\n<p>Most shelves were empty.<\/p>\n<p>One held a waterproof case.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped toward it.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine caught my arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A tiny red light blinked above the case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlarm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Agustin examined it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you disable it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elaine shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMercer changed the system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe take it anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I reached toward the case.<\/p>\n<p>Before my fingers touched it, the red light turned green.<\/p>\n<p>A lock clicked.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody had touched anything.<\/p>\n<p>Then a speaker hidden somewhere in the room came alive.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Mercer\u2019s voice filled the chamber.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMadison.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared upward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wondered how long it would take you to find your father\u2019s real archive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The door behind us slammed shut.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=10416\">Click here to continue reading: PART 6: Locked Beneath Mercer\u2019s Property, We Opened My Father\u2019s Second Archive and Heard the Conversation That Changed Everything I Believed About His Death<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Danielle\u2019s finger remained pointed toward the landing.
