He had treated Rachel too.<\/p>\n<p>Agustin pulled out a chair and sat as if he belonged in our kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour doctor was part of the original project.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I kept Danielle behind me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf he knew I was being poisoned, why didn\u2019t he stop it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause your illness benefited people who had spent decades protecting themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald pointed at Agustin. \u201cYou called me your brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Agustin studied him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou truly don\u2019t remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was two.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s voice came from the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was taken away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We all turned.<\/p>\n<p>She stood near the front door, soaked from the rain that had begun outside. Her eyes were swollen.<\/p>\n<p>Donald looked between them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou came back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI couldn\u2019t leave you with him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Agustin laughed softly.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father separated you,\u201d she told Donald. \u201cAgustin discovered records connected to the trials. Your father believed he would expose everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo he erased his own son?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe sent Agustin away and changed the family history. You grew up believing you were an only child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald sat heavily.<\/p>\n<p>Agustin\u2019s expression remained unreadable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father did that to you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father did many things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stepped farther into the room. \u201cSo did you, Agustin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd so did you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words struck their target.<\/p>\n<p>I turned to Rachel. \u201cDid you poison me because he threatened you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt first I thought I could control the amount.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t an answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey threatened Danielle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Agustin shook his head. \u201cNot at the beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does he mean?\u201d Donald asked.<\/p>\n<p>No answer.<\/p>\n<p>Agustin supplied it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother was already helping before anyone mentioned Danielle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald looked sick.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel began speaking quickly. \u201cI believed Madison\u2019s inheritance would destroy everything. I believed if the old company records surfaced, you would lose your business, your home, everything your father had built.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy business?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWickham Holdings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald frowned. \u201cThat\u2019s just a name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Agustin leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was my name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald went silent.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel explained that Donald\u2019s father had preserved pieces of the old pharmaceutical operation through legitimate successor companies. Donald had unknowingly built his business on structures created decades earlier.<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward Agustin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo what do you actually want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ledger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think I have it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father had it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father died when I was twenty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was murdered because he refused to surrender it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sentence landed differently hearing it from Agustin.<\/p>\n<p>My father had not been wealthy in the way I remembered wealth. He drove an old car. He repaired appliances rather than replacing them. When he died, I inherited boxes, books, photographs and sentimental objects.<\/p>\n<p>Or so I had believed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho killed him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Agustin\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople who believed secrets were cheaper to bury than crimes were to answer for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat includes you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The admission surprised me.<\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t defend himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI helped move materials. I falsified inventories. When I discovered what the compounds were being used for, I tried to leave. By then I was already guilty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald stared at him. \u201cAnd your solution was to spend years terrorizing my family?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy solution was to finish something everyone else abandoned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou poisoned Madison.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Agustin looked at Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI supplied what was requested.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel whispered, \u201cYou told me it wouldn\u2019t kill her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou wanted her weak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo do what?\u201d I demanded.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel began crying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo find the ledger before they did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, her behavior made a terrible kind of sense without becoming excusable. She had been serving two purposes at once: keeping the people behind the old conspiracy convinced that I was being neutralized while searching our home for whatever my father had hidden.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could have told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou lived in my house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou watched me get sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou watched Danielle worry about me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought if I kept the dose low\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t get to call poisoning someone protection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her hand dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Agustin looked almost satisfied by the exchange.<\/p>\n<p>Donald moved between us. \u201cWhere is the ledger?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel shook her head. \u201cI never found it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Agustin stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you were searching the wrong life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father didn\u2019t trust Rachel. He didn\u2019t trust Donald\u2019s father. Eventually he didn\u2019t trust me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat narrows the list.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe trusted you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was a child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something shifted in my memory.<\/p>\n<p>After my father died, my mother had packed his belongings. Most had been sold or donated. A handful came with me: photographs, letters, a jewelry box and a small wooden music box that had belonged to him.<\/p>\n<p>I hadn\u2019t opened it in years.<\/p>\n<p>Agustin saw recognition cross my face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you remember?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t answer.<\/p>\n<p>I ran upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>The attic smelled of dust and old cardboard. I dragged two boxes from beneath a suitcase, opened one and found childhood books. The second contained framed photographs and a faded blue blanket.<\/p>\n<p>Beneath them sat the music box.<\/p>\n<p>I carried it downstairs.<\/p>\n<p>Donald recognized it immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve had that since before we met.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Agustin remained motionless.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the lid.<\/p>\n<p>A delicate melody played.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing inside except a faded photograph.<\/p>\n<p>I removed it.<\/p>\n<p>The velvet lining underneath felt uneven.<\/p>\n<p>My fingernail caught a narrow seam.<\/p>\n<p>Donald brought the flashlight closer.<\/p>\n<p>I lifted the lining.<\/p>\n<p>A shallow metal compartment had been built into the bottom.<\/p>\n<p>Inside rested a memory card.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Agustin exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel gripped the back of a chair.<\/p>\n<p>I held the card between two fingers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ledger?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Agustin nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNames, payments, trial records, physicians, lawyers, executives, shell companies. Enough evidence to reopen cases people thought were buried forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd my father\u2019s death?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf he copied everything, yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald reached for his phone.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel suddenly said, \u201cWait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned sharply.<\/p>\n<p>She pointed toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>A vehicle had stopped across the street.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>Agustin\u2019s confidence disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey found us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people I\u2019ve been trying to reach before they reached the ledger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald looked at him. \u201cYou said you were part of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Agustin stared through the blinds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think a conspiracy survives twenty-two years because everyone remains friends?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Charlene.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI identified the DNA,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt belongs to someone already in the hospital system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She gave me the name.<\/p>\n<p>My eyes moved toward the old photograph on the table.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>The physician who had spent years treating both Rachel and me had handled the substance himself.<\/p>\n<p>Before I could speak, the front window shattered.<\/p>\n<p>Donald threw himself toward Danielle.<\/p>\n<p>I dropped behind the kitchen island, clutching the memory card.<\/p>\n<p>A second impact struck the wall.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel screamed.<\/p>\n<p>Agustin pulled us toward the rear hallway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey aren\u2019t here for you anymore,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>I closed my fist around the tiny card my father had hidden decades earlier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what are they here for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Agustin looked at my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Outside, car doors slammed.<\/p>\n<p>Several people were approaching the house.<\/p>\n<p>Donald lifted Danielle into his arms.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stood frozen between the kitchen and the hallway, finally confronted by the consequences of every secret she had tried to manage alone.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at my daughter, then at my husband, then at the evidence my father had died protecting.<\/p>\n<p>For years I had allowed other people to tell me what was normal\u2014my symptoms, Rachel\u2019s behavior, the unanswered questions surrounding my father.<\/p>\n<p>That ended now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBack door,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Donald nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Agustin moved first.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel followed.<\/p>\n<p>I kept Danielle between Donald and me as we entered the dark service corridor behind the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>Another window shattered.<\/p>\n<p>Someone entered the front of the house.<\/p>\n<p>We were halfway to the rear exit when Danielle tugged my sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pointed toward the staircase.<\/p>\n<p>A shadow moved across the upstairs landing.<\/p>\n<p>Someone was already inside.<\/p>\n<p>And whoever had come for my father\u2019s ledger had reached our family before we could escape.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=10415\">Click here to continue reading: PART 5: Trapped Between the Intruder Upstairs and Armed Strangers Outside, We Followed Agustin Into a Passage Rachel Had Hidden From Us for Years<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Donald stared at the photograph until his face seemed to empty. \u201cThat\u2019s Dr. Mercer.\u201d I knew the doctor by another role: the man who had repeatedly reassured me that my &hellip;
