I was trying to help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pushed back from the table. \u201cI am not going to be interrogated in my own family\u2019s kitchen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s our kitchen,\u201d Donald said.<\/p>\n<p>The correction surprised all of us.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stared at her son. For a brief second, hurt displaced fear. Then she straightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou believe this nonsense?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald looked at Danielle. \u201cI believe something frightened my daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I reached beneath the sink and removed the sealed sample I had saved. Then I placed my phone beside it and opened photographs of Charlene\u2019s preliminary laboratory results.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had yesterday\u2019s tea tested.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel went perfectly still.<\/p>\n<p>Donald read the report twice. \u201cImmunosuppressant?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRepeated exposure,\u201d I said. \u201cCharlene found evidence in my blood too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes moved toward his mother.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s expression changed from indignation to calculation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCharlene isn\u2019t your physician.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe doesn\u2019t need to be my physician to identify a chemical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve been sick for years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat proves nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt proves enough that I\u2019m not drinking anything else you prepare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s chair scraped against the floor as she stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI cared for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI cooked for you. Watched Danielle. Sat with you after your procedures. Drove you when Donald was working.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou paid bills and thought that made you generous.\u201d Her voice sharpened. \u201cYou never understood what I sacrificed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald stood. \u201cMom, stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel looked at him as if he had struck her.<\/p>\n<p>For ten years, Donald had managed conflict by smoothing it over. When Rachel criticized my career, he called her old-fashioned. When she ignored boundaries, he said she meant well. When she rearranged our plans, he asked me to be patient.<\/p>\n<p>This morning there was nowhere left for patience to hide.<\/p>\n<p>I removed the crumpled receipt from my pocket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is Agustin Wickham?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s reaction lasted less than a second.<\/p>\n<p>It was enough.<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes flicked toward the hallway before returning to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis name was beneath your jar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know what you\u2019re talking about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald stepped closer. \u201cMom, do you know him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou just reacted to his name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I placed the receipt beside the laboratory report.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen explain this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel reached for it.<\/p>\n<p>I covered the paper with my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive it to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something hard appeared in her face. Then, just as quickly, it disappeared. Her shoulders sagged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have no idea what you\u2019re doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She glanced toward Danielle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot in front of her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I took Danielle into the living room and turned on a movie. She grabbed my wrist before I could leave.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you going to drink Grandma\u2019s tea anymore?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNever again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded as if that was the only answer she needed.<\/p>\n<p>When I returned, Donald and Rachel were standing on opposite sides of the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>Donald pointed at the receipt. \u201cStart talking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel whispered, \u201cSomeone has been watching this house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neither of us responded.<\/p>\n<p>She rubbed her hands together. \u201cI wasn\u2019t supposed to say anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is watching us?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgustin?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes widened.<\/p>\n<p>Donald saw it too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel backed toward the counter. \u201cYou don\u2019t understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen make us understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Three slow knocks sounded at the front door.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>Donald turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t open it,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n<p>Another three knocks followed.<\/p>\n<p>Danielle appeared in the living-room doorway. I immediately crossed to her.<\/p>\n<p>The doorbell rang twice.<\/p>\n<p>Then a man called through the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her fingers closed around the edge of the counter.<\/p>\n<p>Donald looked at her. \u201cYou know him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The voice came again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have until tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Footsteps retreated down the walkway.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody moved until the sound disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>Donald turned on his mother. \u201cWhat does he want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stared at the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoney.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her answer was almost inaudible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the tea, the receipt and the woman who had spent a decade inside my home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Agustin give you the powder?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald\u2019s face collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I didn\u2019t choose it,\u201d she said quickly. \u201cI was told what to use.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause they needed you sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word they lodged in my mind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho are they?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel sank into the chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour inheritance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed. \u201cI don\u2019t have an inheritance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father left you more than you were told.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father had died when I was twenty. The story I knew was simple: debts, failed investments, nothing left except a few boxes of photographs and an old music box I had carried from house to house because I couldn\u2019t bear to throw it away.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel reached into her robe and unfolded a yellowing document.<\/p>\n<p>My name appeared near the bottom.<\/p>\n<p>The document described an ownership interest transferred to me when I turned thirty.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty was the age I had been when I married Donald.<\/p>\n<p>It was also the year Rachel moved into our home.<\/p>\n<p>And the year my unexplained illnesses began.<\/p>\n<p>I looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father owned part of a pharmaceutical company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald read over my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never seen this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s laugh contained no humor. \u201cYou weren\u2019t supposed to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would Madison marrying me matter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the ownership could be transferred through the marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald stared at her. \u201cTransferred to whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo people who believed it belonged to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered my wedding day. There had been an older man outside the church, silver-haired and strangely intent on watching us. I had asked Rachel who he was.<\/p>\n<p>No one important, she had said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas Agustin at our wedding?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s face answered before she did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo make sure the marriage happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald stepped backward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Madison, I knew nothing about this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to believe him. His shock looked genuine, but that morning had taught me how little appearances were worth.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered the camera.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the application.<\/p>\n<p>The kitchen feed was still recording.<\/p>\n<p>Except there was something on the screen I hadn\u2019t noticed before: a tiny movement near the edge of the hallway shortly before Rachel entered that morning.<\/p>\n<p>A shadow.<\/p>\n<p>Someone else had been inside.<\/p>\n<p>I enlarged the image.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel saw what I was doing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her. \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTurn that off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her fear was immediate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause that camera isn\u2019t only watching us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My phone vibrated.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>A photograph appeared.<\/p>\n<p>It showed Donald, Rachel, Danielle and me standing around the kitchen table.<\/p>\n<p>The picture had been taken less than two minutes earlier.<\/p>\n<p>From somewhere inside our house.<\/p>\n<p>A message beneath it contained a warning telling me I should never have interfered with the tea.<\/p>\n<p>I slowly raised my eyes toward the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had been listening to every word.<\/p>\n<p>And whoever had taken the photograph might still be inside.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=10413\">Click here to continue reading: PART 3: The Photograph Taken Inside Our House Forced Rachel to Reveal a Buried Pharmaceutical Scheme Connecting Donald, My Father, and the Man Watching Us<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rachel recovered quickly. \u201cIt\u2019s too hot,\u201d she said, reaching for the cup.
