Give us your location.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom breathed slowly.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said, \u201cMargaret, do you remember where your father took you when you learned to drive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mind went blank.<\/p>\n<p>Then I saw it.<\/p>\n<p>A wide empty parking lot behind the county fairgrounds.<\/p>\n<p>Dad sitting beside me.<\/p>\n<p>My hands trembling on the steering wheel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel shook his head violently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to show you something before anyone else sees it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Richard chose you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words hurt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd because I finally understand why.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The line disconnected.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas grabbed his coat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t start.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe specifically said alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Samuel specifically said don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel was already calling the police.<\/p>\n<p>I stood in the middle of my parents\u2019 bedroom.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s empty side.<\/p>\n<p>Mom missing.<\/p>\n<p>My siblings watching me.<\/p>\n<p>A year earlier, I would have let someone else decide.<\/p>\n<p>Dad.<\/p>\n<p>Mom.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone.<\/p>\n<p>Now the decision belonged to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel lowered his phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith police nearby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot visible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is insane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah took my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBring her back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I squeezed it.<\/p>\n<p>Then left.<\/p>\n<p>The fairgrounds were twenty minutes away.<\/p>\n<p>I parked beneath a dead light at the edge of the empty lot.<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s car wasn\u2019t there.<\/p>\n<p>For a moment, I thought she had lied again.<\/p>\n<p>Then a figure stepped from behind the maintenance building.<\/p>\n<p>Mom.<\/p>\n<p>She carried her laptop beneath one arm.<\/p>\n<p>In the other hand was Dad\u2019s brown folder.<\/p>\n<p>I got out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She walked toward me.<\/p>\n<p>Her face was pale.<\/p>\n<p>Her coat was buttoned wrong.<\/p>\n<p>I had never seen her look so exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou came alone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClose enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She handed me the folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the original.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s notes.<\/p>\n<p>Northbridge contracts.<\/p>\n<p>Printed emails.<\/p>\n<p>Then a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>It showed Eric Lawson sitting at a restaurant table.<\/p>\n<p>Across from him was David Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>The date printed in the corner was three years old.<\/p>\n<p>Long before David claimed Dad asked him to investigate Northbridge.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Mom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She opened the laptop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel told you not to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI already found it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She turned the screen toward me.<\/p>\n<p>A folder of archived messages.<\/p>\n<p>One email had been sent from David Mercer to Eric Lawson almost three years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>The subject line contained only two words.<\/p>\n<p>COLLINS EXIT.<\/p>\n<p>I opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Mom whispered, \u201cYour father trusted the wrong man before any of us did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The message was short.<\/p>\n<p>But the final sentence made my stomach turn.<\/p>\n<p>Richard will never sell voluntarily.
