Copies of everything Marcus had me do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInsurance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt least you\u2019re honest about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive it to the police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome give it yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Patrick said the one thing that made my blood run cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knows about Jason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My brother stopped moving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about Jason?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus asked whether your brother still takes Route 12 to work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jason\u2019s face drained.<\/p>\n<p>Dad grabbed the back of a chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPatrick, where is Marcus?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The line went dead.<\/p>\n<p>For half a second nobody moved.<\/p>\n<p>Then the room erupted.<\/p>\n<p>Reyes called dispatch.<\/p>\n<p>Dad called Jason\u2019s office and told them not to let anyone into the building.<\/p>\n<p>Jason demanded a patrol car.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Coleman gathered the evidence.<\/p>\n<p>I stood in the center of the kitchen, hearing voices without processing them.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick had finally given us something useful.<\/p>\n<p>A storage unit.<\/p>\n<p>A trail to Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>And a warning.<\/p>\n<p>Jason was no longer merely my brother.<\/p>\n<p>He was leverage.<\/p>\n<p>Reyes ended his call.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re moving you both.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomewhere not connected to your regular routine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad said, \u201cI\u2019m coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reyes shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat may not be wise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s stare could have cut glass.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou will not move my children somewhere and refuse to tell me where.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I touched his arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Marcus wants leverage, all of us together makes that easier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hated the logic.<\/p>\n<p>So did I.<\/p>\n<p>Reyes arranged separate transportation.<\/p>\n<p>Before leaving Patrick\u2019s office, I looked once more at the desk.<\/p>\n<p>The open drawer.<\/p>\n<p>The files.<\/p>\n<p>The spreadsheet.<\/p>\n<p>For years, I had thought the locked room in our marriage existed inside Patrick.<\/p>\n<p>Now I knew he had literally built one.<\/p>\n<p>As Officer Reyes escorted us outside, his phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>He answered.<\/p>\n<p>Listened.<\/p>\n<p>Then stopped walking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He held up a hand.<\/p>\n<p>Dad stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>Reyes\u2019s face had gone pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey opened the storage unit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did they find?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinancial records. Photographs. Copies of forged documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA second shovel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reyes hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA photograph of the Briarwood overlook.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are handwritten notes on the back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do they say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked from me to Jason.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDistance to guardrail. Camera locations.
