Banking authority. Financial correspondence. Investment transactions. Certain property matters. The document seemed designed to transform Patrick\u2019s interference into something legitimate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat could he do with this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elaine chose her words carefully. \u201cIf accepted as valid, quite a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad leaned forward. \u201cIncluding loans?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInvestments?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProperty?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn some circumstances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick had not simply taken money whenever he needed it. Someone had prepared documents giving him the appearance of legal authority.<\/p>\n<p>I whispered, \u201cHe planned this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody contradicted me.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine turned several pages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe irregularities were noticed two days ago after activity involving one of your investment accounts triggered a review. Your father was contacted because of his connection to that account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Dad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew before dinner?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew something was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you said nothing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought about his phone beneath the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe messages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded. \u201cI was confirming details.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe car made you suspicious?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe taxi did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI gave you that Honda because I wanted you to have something entirely your own. When you arrived without it and Patrick avoided explaining why, I wondered whether the financial concerns were connected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I wiped my eyes angrily.<\/p>\n<p>Dad moved closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t have to protect him anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sentence struck somewhere deeper than the missing money.<\/p>\n<p>I had protected Patrick almost automatically. I had protected him from Dad, Jason, my friends, and eventually from my own judgment.<\/p>\n<p>Whenever Patrick embarrassed me, I explained his stress.<\/p>\n<p>Whenever he controlled money, I called him organized.<\/p>\n<p>Whenever he criticized my family, I said he was insecure.<\/p>\n<p>Whenever I felt lonely, I told myself marriage required patience.<\/p>\n<p>I had become so practiced at defending him that I had stopped recognizing what I was defending.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine waited until I looked at her again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s another matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed from exhaustion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course there is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She removed a printed email.<\/p>\n<p>Dad read over my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>The message concerned the house where Patrick and I lived.<\/p>\n<p>My house.<\/p>\n<p>I had purchased it before our marriage with savings and help from an inheritance left by my grandmother. Patrick contributed to household costs after moving in, but the deed remained in my name.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine tapped the page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis appears to concern refinancing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I read the proposed amount.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe can\u2019t refinance my house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot legitimately without proper authority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the forged power of attorney.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine nodded.<\/p>\n<p>A note appeared near the bottom of the correspondence.<\/p>\n<p>Use equity for acquisition. Wife will not object.<\/p>\n<p>I read it again.<\/p>\n<p>Then again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWife will not object.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho wrote that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re investigating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know who talks like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patrick had spent years speaking for me.<\/p>\n<p>Jenna won\u2019t mind.<\/p>\n<p>Jenna doesn\u2019t care.<\/p>\n<p>Jenna agrees.<\/p>\n<p>Jenna understands.<\/p>\n<p>My silence had repeatedly been translated into consent.<\/p>\n<p>The study door suddenly opened.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick stood there.<\/p>\n<p>He must have returned without anyone hearing him enter.<\/p>\n<p>His gaze went first to me, then Dad, Mr. Coleman, and finally Elaine.<\/p>\n<p>The moment he saw the documents, his face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClose the door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patrick remained in the doorway. \u201cWho are these people?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know Mr. Coleman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes shifted to Elaine.<\/p>\n<p>She introduced herself.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick\u2019s face lost color.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me. \u201cJenna, come outside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to talk privately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice sharpened. \u201cThis is between us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time in years, I realized I did not have to match his volume or justify myself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are forged documents with my name on them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patrick glanced toward the desk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can explain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad picked up the power of attorney.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patrick swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s context.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat context makes Jenna\u2019s forged signature legitimate?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t understand what was happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen explain it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patrick looked at me again. \u201cNot with them here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo more private conversations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words surprised both of us.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes narrowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father is turning you against me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad answered before I could. \u201cYou transferred her money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was household money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom her individual account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re married.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou attempted to use her identity for a loan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patrick opened his mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing came out.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped toward the desk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you sign my name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJenna\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes or no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s complicated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. It isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was trying to protect us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat were you buying?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat acquisition needed my house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still nothing.<\/p>\n<p>I understood then that whatever Patrick feared was larger than being caught taking the Honda.<\/p>\n<p>Dad opened the study door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can explain tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patrick looked startled. \u201cTomorrow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJenna is staying here tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t your decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patrick stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word sounded strange coming from him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, anger worked across his face. Then it disappeared behind the polished expression he used with clients.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pointed toward the papers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut don\u2019t sign anything until you\u2019ve heard my side.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Coleman said, \u201cYou should probably stop giving her legal advice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patrick glared at him.<\/p>\n<p>Then he looked at me one last time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re making a mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt strangely calm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe. But this one will be mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He left.<\/p>\n<p>Dad walked into the hallway and watched until the front door closed.<\/p>\n<p>When he returned, I expected relief.<\/p>\n<p>Instead Elaine was staring at her phone.<\/p>\n<p>Her expression had changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMs. Bennett?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just received an alert.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stepped toward her.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine turned the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA transfer request was submitted a few minutes ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour retirement account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For a moment I could not process the words.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She told me.<\/p>\n<p>Almost all of it.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s voice became hard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlock it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m contacting the authorization team now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the doorway through which Patrick had disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did it after leaving this room?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe request was initiated minutes ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you prove it was him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elaine began typing rapidly.<\/p>\n<p>My phone buzzed.<\/p>\n<p>A message from Patrick appeared.<\/p>\n<p>We need to fix this before everyone makes it worse.<\/p>\n<p>I showed Elaine.<\/p>\n<p>She photographed the screen.<\/p>\n<p>Another message arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Come home and I\u2019ll explain everything.<\/p>\n<p>Then a third.<\/p>\n<p>Do not let your father interfere with our finances.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the last word.<\/p>\n<p>Our.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing had ever been ours in the way Patrick claimed.<\/p>\n<p>What was mine became ours whenever he wanted access.<\/p>\n<p>What was his became private whenever I asked questions.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine\u2019s phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>She answered and began giving account numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Dad paced once across the room.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Coleman opened his laptop.<\/p>\n<p>Jason appeared at the doorway, took one look at our faces, and asked, \u201cWhat happened now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone\u2019s trying to empty Jenna\u2019s retirement account,\u201d Dad said.<\/p>\n<p>Jason swore under his breath.<\/p>\n<p>I sat down.<\/p>\n<p>My hands had stopped trembling.<\/p>\n<p>That frightened me more than the panic.<\/p>\n<p>I felt as though my mind had reached its limit and become cold instead.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe transfer hasn\u2019t settled. We have a window.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough to act if we move now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad pulled a chair beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you need?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elaine looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything changed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPasswords. Recovery emails. Security questions. Trusted devices. Phone authentication. Credit locks. Every financial credential Patrick may know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought about years of shared passwords.<\/p>\n<p>My email.<\/p>\n<p>My banking.<\/p>\n<p>My phone account.<\/p>\n<p>My birthday.<\/p>\n<p>My Social Security number.<\/p>\n<p>My mother\u2019s maiden name.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick knew all of it.<\/p>\n<p>Once, he had told me married people should have no secrets.<\/p>\n<p>Now I understood that he had demanded transparency from me while constructing an entire hidden financial life of his own.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine began with my email.<\/p>\n<p>I changed the password.<\/p>\n<p>Then the bank.<\/p>\n<p>Then investments.<\/p>\n<p>Then cloud storage.<\/p>\n<p>With every change, another small door closed.<\/p>\n<p>Dad sat beside me without speaking.<\/p>\n<p>Near midnight, Elaine finally leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe retirement transfer has been blocked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPatrick\u2019s known devices have been removed.
