I knew it could be worth tens of millions if the corridor happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo the eighteen thousand wasn&#39;t the point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked ashamed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI needed to know whether you would give me access voluntarily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer chilled me even after all this time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you did, Charles believed we could eventually persuade you to sign other documents without reading everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe money request was a test.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd when I refused?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI panicked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s why you asked whether I was sure the account was mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She had been probing.<\/p>\n<p>Trying to make me doubt.<\/p>\n<p>I sat back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would have happened if I said yes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMelinda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we would have taken more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The honesty hurt.<\/p>\n<p>But I had come for honesty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould you have taken Hawthorne?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No excuse.<\/p>\n<p>No Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>No Charles.<\/p>\n<p>Just yes.<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked startled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor finally answering without trying to make me feel better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She began crying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am sorry about Dale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think about that night every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI imagine you do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I had called\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe might have lived.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>I continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr he might have died from his heart condition a week later. Or a month later. We cannot know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you had a chance to warn him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you didn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is what you have to live with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>I had expected saying it to feel cruel.<\/p>\n<p>It did not.<\/p>\n<p>It felt clean.<\/p>\n<p>Melinda wiped her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you hate me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut hate requires attention.
