Raymond\u2019s files.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd they burned the next night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dawson nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fire department ruled it electrical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMelinda said it was lightning,\u201d Eric murmured.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told me once that Dad lost records in a lightning fire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt cold.<\/p>\n<p>Dale had told me the same thing.<\/p>\n<p>But official records said electrical.<\/p>\n<p>Two people had repeated the same false detail.<\/p>\n<p>One of them was my husband.<\/p>\n<p>The other was Melinda.<\/p>\n<p>Robert noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere would Melinda have heard that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eric shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom Dale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe he told her deliberately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo see whether she repeated it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The possibility sounded like Dale.<\/p>\n<p>He sometimes tested people with harmless pieces of incorrect information. Not cruelly. He simply believed secrets traveled in predictable directions.<\/p>\n<p>Dawson opened another section of the notebook.<\/p>\n<p>A page contained three columns.<\/p>\n<p>LIGHTNING.<\/p>\n<p>MELINDA.<\/p>\n<p>T.R.<\/p>\n<p>My heart sank.<\/p>\n<p>Dale had done exactly what I suspected.<\/p>\n<p>He told Melinda the false story about lightning.<\/p>\n<p>Weeks later, Thomas Reed referenced lightning during a telephone conversation Dale recorded in his notes.<\/p>\n<p>That proved Melinda and Thomas had discussed Hawthorne.<\/p>\n<p>Years before Thomas supposedly died.<\/p>\n<p>Eric sat motionless.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long did Dad suspect her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dawson answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt least four years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd nobody told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDale believed confronting you without proof would force you to choose between him and your wife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eric looked away.<\/p>\n<p>I understood Dale\u2019s decision now, though I wished he had made another.<\/p>\n<p>Robert returned to the old fire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas anything recovered?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dawson nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne metal cashbox.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Inside were partially burned papers and a small ledger belonging to Raymond.<\/p>\n<p>Dale kept the ledger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The blue notebook mentioned it only once.<\/p>\n<p>RAYMOND LEDGER\u2014NOT HOUSE.<\/p>\n<p>That was all.<\/p>\n<p>We spent the afternoon searching possibilities.<\/p>\n<p>Not the house.<\/p>\n<p>Not the safe-deposit box.<\/p>\n<p>Not Dawson\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>Eric suddenly looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandpa\u2019s workshop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dale\u2019s father\u2019s workshop had stood behind an old farmhouse owned by Dale\u2019s cousin. The farmhouse had been sold years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop remained.<\/p>\n<p>I had not visited it in nearly fifteen years.<\/p>\n<p>Robert checked the property records.<\/p>\n<p>The land now belonged to a woman named Susan Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>Dale\u2019s cousin.<\/p>\n<p>I called.<\/p>\n<p>Susan answered on the fourth ring.<\/p>\n<p>When I explained who I was, she became quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said something strange.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wondered when you would call.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We drove there before evening.<\/p>\n<p>Susan was seventy-eight, thin and sharp-eyed.<\/p>\n<p>She hugged me at the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou look tired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at Eric.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou look worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop stood behind the farmhouse beneath two enormous oak trees.<\/p>\n<p>Susan carried the key.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, dust covered old tools, shelves and coffee cans filled with screws.<\/p>\n<p>I smelled machine oil.<\/p>\n<p>For one impossible second, I remembered Dale as a young man.<\/p>\n<p>Susan walked directly to a wooden workbench.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDale came here eight months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore he died?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe never told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asked me not to tell anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pulled open a drawer.<\/p>\n<p>Empty.<\/p>\n<p>Then she pressed beneath the drawer frame.<\/p>\n<p>A hidden compartment released.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a metal cashbox blackened by fire.<\/p>\n<p>Eric whispered, \u201cHe left it here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Susan handed it to me.<\/p>\n<p>The lock opened with a key taped beneath the workbench.<\/p>\n<p>Inside lay a small ledger.<\/p>\n<p>Its edges were burned.<\/p>\n<p>Robert opened it carefully.<\/p>\n<p>Most entries were ordinary.<\/p>\n<p>Equipment.<\/p>\n<p>Materials.<\/p>\n<p>Loans.<\/p>\n<p>Then he reached the final pages.<\/p>\n<p>There were payments from Raymond to Voss Financial.<\/p>\n<p>Large ones.<\/p>\n<p>Beside several was a notation.<\/p>\n<p>T.R. SENIOR.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Reed\u2019s father.<\/p>\n<p>The final entry had been underlined twice.<\/p>\n<p>$600,000.<\/p>\n<p>COLLATERAL: HAWTHORNE.<\/p>\n<p>NO AUTHORIZATION.<\/p>\n<p>Robert looked at Dawson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is evidence of an unauthorized loan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPotentially.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho received the money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dawson pointed to a company name.<\/p>\n<p>It had dissolved decades earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Robert searched corporate records.<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s original directors included Charles Voss\u2019s father and Thomas Reed\u2019s father.<\/p>\n<p>The pattern had begun with their fathers.<\/p>\n<p>Raymond discovered it.<\/p>\n<p>Then Raymond died.<\/p>\n<p>The records burned.<\/p>\n<p>Dale spent decades protecting Hawthorne because he believed someone would eventually try again.<\/p>\n<p>Eric walked outside.<\/p>\n<p>I followed.<\/p>\n<p>He stood beneath the oak trees with both hands on his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy entire marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEric.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if she married me because of this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to say no.<\/p>\n<p>A mother wants to protect her child even when that child is forty.<\/p>\n<p>But false comfort had already cost us too much.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe suspected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe hated her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Dale didn&#39;t hate easily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eric laughed bitterly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn&#39;t much comfort.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We returned inside.<\/p>\n<p>Susan had made tea.<\/p>\n<p>While Robert photographed the ledger, she sat beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDale was scared near the end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf dying?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She glanced toward Eric.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf leaving you two without enough time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he tell you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said somebody had started asking about Hawthorne again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wouldn&#39;t say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Susan remembered something.<\/p>\n<p>A man had come to the farmhouse three weeks after Dale died.<\/p>\n<p>He claimed he was researching Mercer family history.<\/p>\n<p>He asked about the workshop.<\/p>\n<p>Susan refused him access.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you describe him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout sixty. Gray hair. Expensive shoes. He drove a black sedan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert looked up sharply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCharles Voss?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He showed her a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Susan nodded immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The same black sedan Eric and I had noticed leaving the bank garage.<\/p>\n<p>Charles Voss knew we had the notebook.<\/p>\n<p>He knew about Hawthorne.<\/p>\n<p>And he knew where Dale had hidden Raymond\u2019s records.<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>This time the number was visible.<\/p>\n<p>Melinda.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>She was crying again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret, I need your help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can&#39;t tell you yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen I can&#39;t help you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas found me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eric moved toward the phone.<\/p>\n<p>I held up my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs he with you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did he find you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then she said something that made Robert reach for a pen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCharles told him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Robert.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCharles Voss?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is Charles?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMelinda, listen carefully. We found Raymond\u2019s ledger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Not confusion.<\/p>\n<p>Recognition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou shouldn&#39;t have done that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause that&#39;s what Thomas has been looking for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor twenty-one years?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her answer came in a whisper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Raymond didn&#39;t die in a car accident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My fingers tightened around the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melinda began to speak.<\/p>\n<p>Then a man&#39;s voice sounded somewhere near her.<\/p>\n<p>She gasped.<\/p>\n<p>The call ended.<\/p>\n<p>Eric grabbed his keys.<\/p>\n<p>Robert stopped him again.<\/p>\n<p>But this time Eric pointed toward the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou heard that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe may be in danger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert was already calling Officer Grant.<\/p>\n<p>Before he finished dialing, Melinda sent one final message.<\/p>\n<p>No words.<\/p>\n<p>Only coordinates.<\/p>\n<p>Officer Grant traced them.<\/p>\n<p>An abandoned marina near the lake where Thomas Reed had supposedly died.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty minutes later, police units were moving toward it.<\/p>\n<p>We were told to stay behind.<\/p>\n<p>Eric refused.<\/p>\n<p>So did I.<\/p>\n<p>When we reached the marina, flashing lights illuminated the water.<\/p>\n<p>Officers searched empty buildings.<\/p>\n<p>They found Melinda\u2019s car.<\/p>\n<p>They found her handbag.<\/p>\n<p>They found blood on the passenger door.<\/p>\n<p>But they did not find Melinda.<\/p>\n<p>On the dashboard lay an old photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Raymond Mercer stood beside Dale.<\/p>\n<p>Across Raymond\u2019s face someone had drawn a black line.<\/p>\n<p>On the back were six words.<\/p>\n<p>HE FOUND OUT WHAT WE DID.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=10284\">Click here to continue reading: PART 7: Melinda Vanished at the Marina, and Eric\u2019s Search Through Her Office Exposed the Bargain She Had Made With Thomas<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I remembered the fire as a telephone call in the middle of the night.
