The document remained on my kitchen table all night, flattened beneath the yellow light above the stove as though leaving it visible might force it to explain itself.<\/p>\n
By six the next morning, I had read it eleven times.<\/p>\n
Dale\u2019s signature looked genuine. I had watched him sign his name thousands of times\u2014checks, birthday cards, insurance forms, school papers when Eric was young. His D always leaned farther forward than the rest of the word, as though impatient with the letters following it.<\/p>\n

He sat back.<\/p>\n
