again.

That sentence seemed to settle something in him.

Not enough.

But something.

Later that afternoon, Harris confirmed that the engagement photographs were useful.

They established contact among Brielle, Marcus, and Rebecca earlier than investigators had documented.

Rebecca’s attorney then provided more records.

One file was dated four days after the engagement.

It was titled Carter Events Expansion.

Inside was the earliest business model investigators had found.

Not the polished multimillion-dollar presentation from later.

A rough plan.

Seven pages.

The first page listed potential revenue sources.

Coordination fees.

Vendor markups.

Referral percentages.

Deposits.

Nothing necessarily illegal.

Then page three listed “existing assets.”

I read the items.

Maya’s Table client base.

Maya’s Table vendor relationships.

Family referral network.

Daniel income/credit.

Parents’ home equity.

I stopped.

Even in the earliest plan, people were assets.

My clients.

Dad’s contacts.

Daniel’s income.

My parents’ house.

Not contributions they had offered.

Resources Brielle expected to access.

The pattern had existed before the larger thefts.

Maybe before Marcus.

Maybe before Rebecca understood what Brielle intended.

At the bottom of page three was another line.

Primary challenge: Maya control.

I stared.

Not Maya agreement.

Maya control.

The next page contained possible solutions.

Partnership.

Family pressure.

Gradual integration.

Client migration.

Rebranding.

I read it twice.

Brielle had been planning how to overcome my ownership of my own company.

Before the wedding.

Before the family buyout.

Before hundreds of thousands disappeared.

My refusal had not created the conflict.

It merely exposed a conflict Brielle had been planning around for more than a year.

Then I reached the last page.

A handwritten note appeared in the margin.

If Maya won’t join, create replacement brand and transition clients.

I sat very still.

That was the backup plan.

If I could not be pressured into joining, she would imitate enough of my company to take the relationships anyway.

The fake domain suddenly made more sense.

So did the copied emails.

So did the customer list.

The fraud had evolved beyond stealing deposits.

Brielle had begun preparing to compete with me using information stolen from me.

I called Tessa into the office.

She read the page.

Her face hardened.

“She was going to take the company.”

“Not legally.”

“Clients are the company.”

“Part of it.”

“Your reputation is the rest.”

Exactly.

I had thought the central danger was money.

Then identity.

Now I understood Brielle had eventually intended to separate my reputation from my ownership.

Take the clients.

Take vendor knowledge.

Take the family referral network.

Launch a larger brand.

Offer me fifteen percent later.

If I refused, make Maya’s Table smaller until accepting became rational.

“That’s why she needed the wedding,” I said.

Tessa looked at me.

“What?”

“Three hundred guests.”

I stood.

The wedding was not only a source of stolen catering money.

It was a launch opportunity.

Hundreds of guests.

Family contacts.

Business owners.

Photographs.

Social posts.

A showcase event.

“Check the wedding materials police gave us.”

We searched the digital folder.

Invitation files.

Vendor documents.

Schedules.

Then Tessa found it.

A reception card planned for each table.

The design looked elegant.

At the bottom, beneath the wedding details, was a small line:

Event experience coordinated by Carter & Co.

“What is Carter & Co.?” Tessa asked.

I knew.

Brielle’s planned brand.

The wedding had been intended as its unofficial debut.

My catering would have fed three hundred guests.

Other legitimate vendors would provide flowers, photography, rentals, and music.

Brielle would present the entire event as evidence of what her new company could produce.

She had planned to use everyone else’s work as her portfolio.

I called Daniel.

“Did you approve table cards?”

“What table cards?”

I sent him the file.

He called back immediately.

“I’ve never seen this.”

Of course.

“Did Brielle talk about Carter & Co.?”

“No.”

“Did she tell you she was launching a business at the wedding?”

“No.”

His voice became quiet.

“So even our wedding was marketing.”

I didn’t know what to say.

Maybe it had been both.

A wedding and marketing.

Love and leverage.

Celebration and financial strategy.

With Brielle, categories kept overlapping.

The following morning, Harris confirmed investigators had found printed Carter & Co. materials in the storage unit.

Brochures.

Business cards.

QR codes.

A website scheduled to go live the night of the wedding.

The website contained photographs of my food.

Florals from another company.

Venue images.

Wedding planning language.

And a page introducing Brielle as founder and creative director.

Under “Culinary Partners” appeared Maya’s Table.

No mention that I had never agreed.

Under “Our Story,” Carter & Co. claimed to have spent years developing events through trusted family partnerships.

Years.

Brielle had converted other people’s histories into her company’s résumé.

I asked Harris when the website had been created.

“Eight months before the wedding.”

“How many people saw it?”

“It wasn’t publicly indexed.”

“So the launch never happened.”

“No.”

One more consequence of closing the van.

The wedding collapsed.

The website remained hidden.

The brochures stayed in storage.

Three hundred guests never became Brielle’s first marketing audience.

Daniel never married into the financial structure.

My parents never sold their house.

The launch never occurred.

For the first time, I could see exactly how close she had come.

Not merely to stealing more money.

To changing the public reality around my business before I understood what was happening.

That afternoon, prosecutors formally expanded the charges under review.

Fraud.

Identity theft.

Forgery.

Conspiracy.

Financial crimes connected to multiple entities.

The language sounded clinical.

The consequences were not.

Brielle’s attorney began discussing a possible negotiated resolution.

Marcus’s cooperation intensified.

Rebecca’s role remained contested.

Victim claims continued.

And Maya’s Table kept operating.

Then, on Friday evening, I received a message from Claire.

Call me before you speak to your parents.

I called immediately.

“What happened?”

“Prosecutors found another document in
