to the window.<\/p>\n<p>The backyard looked exactly as it always had.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s grill.<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s flower pots.<\/p>\n<p>The old maple tree Brielle and I climbed as children.<\/p>\n<p>Ordinary surroundings had hidden extraordinary carelessness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were given so many chances to notice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom whispered, \u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the first time she said it without explaining why she hadn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>I turned around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you kept choosing the explanation that required nothing from you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her honesty hurt.<\/p>\n<p>But I respected it.<\/p>\n<p>More than excuses.<\/p>\n<p>She wiped her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know how to fix this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She flinched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeither can I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the important part.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can cooperate. We can tell the truth. We can help victims where it\u2019s reasonable. We can stop lying to keep Brielle comfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut we cannot make this disappear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Harris.<\/p>\n<p>They had searched the storage unit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you find?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBusiness records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCustomer files. Printers. Blank checks. Company stamps.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMine?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome contain your company name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA second laptop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWedding vendor files.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrielle\u2019s wedding?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only hers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A cold feeling spread through me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you saying?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found records for at least seventeen weddings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCatering?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore than catering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She explained.<\/p>\n<p>Brielle had apparently begun offering complete event packages under various names.<\/p>\n<p>Catering.<\/p>\n<p>Florals.<\/p>\n<p>Photography.<\/p>\n<p>Venue deposits.<\/p>\n<p>Some vendors were real.<\/p>\n<p>Some were invented.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes she took money and subcontracted legitimate businesses for less.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes she collected deposits for services that were never booked at all.<\/p>\n<p>The fraud extended well beyond Maya\u2019s Table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToo early.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEstimate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPotentially several hundred thousand more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at Mom.<\/p>\n<p>Her face went white.<\/p>\n<p>The wedding that collapsed had not been the center of Brielle\u2019s scheme.<\/p>\n<p>It had been one event among many.<\/p>\n<p>One stage where the deception finally became too large to hold.<\/p>\n<p>I ended the call and sat in silence.<\/p>\n<p>Mom whispered, \u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I told her.<\/p>\n<p>She closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since the investigation began, I stopped thinking of Brielle as someone who had stolen from me.<\/p>\n<p>That description was too small.<\/p>\n<p>My name had been a tool.<\/p>\n<p>My family had been a shield.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had been a source of money.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus had been a partner.<\/p>\n<p>The wedding had been camouflage.<\/p>\n<p>Brielle had built an entire business out of other people\u2019s trust.<\/p>\n<p>And the more police uncovered, the clearer one question became.<\/p>\n<p>Why had she needed so much money?<\/p>\n<p>The condo explained some.<\/p>\n<p>The trips explained more.<\/p>\n<p>But not enough.<\/p>\n<p>Hours later, Harris sent me one photograph from the storage unit because she needed me to identify a document.<\/p>\n<p>It was a ledger.<\/p>\n<p>Brielle\u2019s handwriting filled the pages.<\/p>\n<p>Dates.<\/p>\n<p>Names.<\/p>\n<p>Amounts.<\/p>\n<p>Beside several entries were initials.<\/p>\n<p>M.C.<\/p>\n<p>Not mine.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus Cole.<\/p>\n<p>Another set appeared repeatedly near the largest transfers.<\/p>\n<p>R.H.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at them.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t know anyone connected to Brielle with those initials.<\/p>\n<p>Then I saw one entry circled twice.<\/p>\n<p>TRANSFER TO RH BEFORE DANIEL FINDS OUT.<\/p>\n<p>The date was three months before the wedding.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever Brielle was hiding had not merely been about theft.<\/p>\n<p>Someone else had been receiving money.<\/p>\n<p>Someone important enough to worry her.<\/p>\n<p>And according to the ledger, Daniel discovering that person would have destroyed everything long before I ever closed the catering van.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=10227\">Click here to continue reading: PART 7: Brielle\u2019s Hidden Ledger Named a Third Person, and Following Those Initials Led Police Straight Into the Life She Had Built Behind Daniel\u2019s Back<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I drove to my parents\u2019 house the next morning before I went to the kitchen.
