Same company name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse accelerated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSend it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A second document arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Then a third.<\/p>\n<p>The names of the customers meant something to me.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered some of those events.<\/p>\n<p>But the amounts were wrong.<\/p>\n<p>The payment instructions were wrong.<\/p>\n<p>And none of the money appeared in my accounting records.<\/p>\n<p>I sat down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTessa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLock everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccounting. Email. Vendor portal. Change every password.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She moved immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel sent another message.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>The dates went backward.<\/p>\n<p>Six months.<\/p>\n<p>A year.<\/p>\n<p>Eighteen months.<\/p>\n<p>My sister\u2019s wedding had suddenly become irrelevant.<\/p>\n<p>I opened my accounting system and began comparing names.<\/p>\n<p>A corporate luncheon.<\/p>\n<p>A graduation.<\/p>\n<p>A private anniversary.<\/p>\n<p>A charity event.<\/p>\n<p>Some transactions were legitimate.<\/p>\n<p>Others existed only on the documents Daniel was sending.<\/p>\n<p>Payments had apparently been collected under my company\u2019s identity and diverted somewhere else.<\/p>\n<p>Tessa returned to my office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much are we talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We began adding figures.<\/p>\n<p>The total rose past fifty thousand.<\/p>\n<p>Then eighty.<\/p>\n<p>Then one hundred thousand.<\/p>\n<p>My hands started shaking.<\/p>\n<p>By the time we reached the records we could identify, the preliminary total was $184,700.<\/p>\n<p>Neither of us spoke.<\/p>\n<p>My sister had spent the morning demanding that I donate her wedding catering because we were family.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, someone had apparently been collecting enormous sums of money using the business I had built.<\/p>\n<p>And all the documents pointed toward Brielle.<\/p>\n<p>My email chimed.<\/p>\n<p>A notice from my bank appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Law enforcement had requested information connected to a financial complaint involving my company.<\/p>\n<p>Tessa read over my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaya?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before I could answer, my phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>I picked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs this Maya Carter, owner of Maya\u2019s Table Catering?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is Detective Harris with the financial crimes division.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room seemed to contract around me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to speak with you about approximately two hundred thousand dollars collected under your company\u2019s name for catering services.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t collect it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detective Harris paused.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said the words that changed the entire meaning of my sister\u2019s wedding day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have reason to believe you didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=10223\">Click here to continue reading: PART 3: The Detective Already Knew My Sister\u2019s Name, but What Brielle Told Police Put My Business, Reputation, and Freedom in Immediate Danger<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For the first mile after leaving the venue, neither Tessa nor I spoke.
