Across from her, five-year-old Liam stared at the unfinished dinosaur on the bedroom floor. Rain scratched against the window, but neither child mistook the sound below for thunder. Their father had come home, and from the violence of his entrance, Chloe knew immediately that whatever happened next would not be ordinary.

A second man's voice drifted up from downstairs. Chloe recognized it as Vince, one of David Miller's friends, a man who always carried the stale smell of cigarettes on his clothes. Then came David's voice, strangely controlled. That frightened Chloe more than shouting. When her father had been drinking, the quiet periods often meant anger was collecting behind his teeth. Liam whispered, "Is Dad mad?" Chloe pressed a finger against her lips and told him to keep working on the dinosaur.

She had become good at giving Liam small jobs when the adults downstairs frightened him. Finish the puzzle. Find your stuffed dog. Count the stars painted on the ceiling. She couldn't make their father sober. She couldn't prevent arguments. She couldn't keep her mother from stepping between David and the children whenever his temper turned toward them. But she could sometimes keep Liam from crying, and in Chloe's nine-year-old mind that had become one of her responsibilities.

A chair scraped across the kitchen floor. Their mother, Sarah, said something too softly for Chloe to understand. David answered clearly enough. "Don't turn your back on me." Liam's fingers opened, and the dinosaur's tail dropped toward the floor. Chloe caught it before it struck the hardwood. She stood and told him they were going into the closet. Months earlier he would have demanded an explanation. Tonight he simply picked up his stuffed dog and followed her.

Chloe shifted boxes and winter clothes until there was room behind the hanging coats. The closet smelled faintly of lavender because Sarah tucked little scented sachets among the blankets. Liam crouched against the wall. When Chloe started to leave, he caught her sleeve. "Stay." She wanted to. Instead she whispered that she needed to see whether Mom was all right. Another crash came from downstairs, followed by Sarah saying David's name and telling him to stop.

Chloe eased into the hallway. She crawled to the top of the stairs and lowered herself behind the banister, looking through the narrow spaces between the rails. David stood near the kitchen, rain darkening his jacket and hair. Vince lingered behind him. Sarah was on the opposite side of the table, her posture rigid. Chloe had always thought of her mother as strong—the woman who carried grocery bags with both arms and somehow still opened the door—but tonight Sarah looked cornered.

Then Chloe noticed a blue suitcase beside the pantry.

She knew it. They had used it when they visited Aunt Rebecca. More important, Chloe recognized several things scattered around it. Her mother's purse sat nearby. A folder bulged from an outside pocket. Chloe remembered Sarah removing documents from the desk over the previous weeks. She remembered cash disappearing into a flour container. She remembered being asked, casually, whether she still knew Aunt Rebecca's telephone number. Until that moment, Chloe had understood only pieces. Now those pieces formed a frightening picture.

Her mother intended to take them away.

David saw the suitcase too. He asked what it was, although his expression showed that he already understood. Sarah told him they could discuss everything when he was sober. David crossed the kitchen, seized the suitcase and hurled it against a cabinet. The zipper tore. Clothes spilled onto the floor—Liam's pajamas, Chloe's jeans, a red shirt, toothbrushes sealed in plastic. Chloe's stomach tightened. This was not an imaginary escape her mother had been considering. They had been leaving tonight.

David accused Sarah of planning to take his children. Sarah answered that Chloe and Liam were not possessions. Vince muttered a warning, apparently trying to calm his friend, but David ignored him. Sarah moved toward the doorway. David stepped into her path. Chloe had seen him block doors before. She knew what came afterward: arguments that became louder, objects that broke, apologies the next morning, and everyone pretending the apology had repaired more than it actually had.

Chloe backed away from the railing. A memory surfaced with startling clarity. Months earlier Sarah had been driving her home from school when she had suddenly explained what to do during an emergency. If Chloe ever became frightened and Sarah could not help, she was to call 911. Chloe had imagined fires and burglars. Sarah had made her memorize their address too. At the time, Chloe had thought her mother was simply being overly careful. Now she understood why the lesson had mattered.

She hurried into the bedroom. Liam looked up immediately and asked about Mom. Chloe didn't answer. On Sarah's bedside table lay an old cellphone that no longer had regular service. Sarah had once explained that emergency calls could still go through. Chloe picked it up. Her hands were shaking badly enough that she touched the wrong number, erased it, and tried again. Nine. One. One. The screen changed, and suddenly the decision became real.

When the dispatcher answered, Chloe couldn't make her voice work. She heard an adult woman asking whether anyone was there. For a second Chloe nearly disconnected. Her father would be furious if he discovered what she was doing. Then something shattered downstairs. Sarah cried out. Chloe pressed the phone harder against her ear and whispered, "Please hurry." The dispatcher asked what was happening. Chloe looked at Liam clutching his stuffed dog and finally said that people were hurting her mother again.

The word again changed the dispatcher's questions. She asked Chloe's name and age, who was downstairs, whether Chloe was safe and whether anyone else was with her. Chloe answered as quietly as possible. Her father was downstairs. Vince was there. Her mother was with them. Liam was upstairs with Chloe. When the dispatcher asked for the address, Chloe closed her eyes and repeated the numbers and street name Sarah had forced her to memorize.

"Help is coming," the woman told her.

Chloe wanted to believe her. She asked whether the police were close. Before the dispatcher could offer much reassurance, a heavy thump sounded downstairs. Liam made a frightened noise. Chloe covered his mouth gently, then immediately hated herself for doing it. The dispatcher heard enough to understand. She instructed Chloe not to investigate. Staying hidden with Liam, she explained, was the best way Chloe could help Sarah until officers arrived.

Then Sarah screamed.

Chloe stood so abruptly that her knee struck the bed. She told the dispatcher she had to go downstairs. The woman firmly ordered her to remain where she was. Chloe was still deciding whether to obey when David's voice carried through the house. He was no longer arguing with Sarah. He was asking a different question.

"Where are the kids?"

Footsteps hit the staircase.

Chloe grabbed Liam and pushed him toward the closet. They squeezed behind the boxes, and Chloe pulled the door almost shut. The phone screen glowed like a tiny lamp in the darkness, so she turned the brightness down and lowered the volume until the dispatcher's voice became little more than a breath. Liam trembled against her. Chloe wrapped an arm around him and whispered that he must not answer anyone.

David reached the second floor. He called Chloe's name once. Then again, more gently. The softness frightened her because she knew it could disappear without warning. The bedroom door opened. A strip of light appeared beneath the closet door. David crossed the room slowly. The bed creaked when he leaned down to check beneath it. Drawers opened and closed. Chloe held Liam so tightly she could feel his heartbeat through his pajamas.

The footsteps stopped directly outside the closet.

The handle turned.

Liam buried his face against Chloe's shoulder. She clamped one hand over the phone and waited for the door to open. It moved only slightly before Vince shouted from downstairs. David froze. Vince called him again, urgently this time. David swore, released the handle and walked away. The bedroom door slammed behind him. Chloe did not move. She didn't even trust herself to breathe normally.

Through the phone, the dispatcher told Chloe she was doing exactly what she needed to do. Chloe whispered the question she had been afraid to ask. "Is someone really coming?" The woman assured her that officers were on their way. Chloe pressed her forehead against Liam's and listened beyond the rain, beyond the pounding of her own pulse, beyond the noises downstairs.

At first she thought she had imagined the distant siren. Then another joined it. They grew louder, raced along the wet street and abruptly stopped outside the Miller house. Chloe's body went rigid with hope. Downstairs, David heard them too. His voice rose sharply as he demanded to know what Sarah had done. Sarah did not answer.

Chloe stared at the thin line of light beneath the closet door. She had made the call. The police had arrived. Yet the locked front door still stood between them and her mother, and David was still downstairs.

For the first time that night, Chloe understood that asking for help and actually reaching safety were not the same thing.

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: Police Broke Through the Locked Door, but Chloe Would Not Leave the Closet Until One Officer Answered Her Hardest Question

The front door hit the wall hard enough to shake something downstairs, and nine-year-old Chloe Miller stopped with a wooden puzzle piece between her fingers.
