where?”

He hesitated.

Paula did not bargain.

She simply waited.

Jared looked down.

“Dad had a private office nobody knew about.”

“Where?”

“Above an old insurance agency on Jefferson.”

“Is the archive there?”

“Most of it.”

“Including Frank Parker’s recording?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did you listen to it?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“There were hundreds of tapes.”

He looked up.

“But there’s something else.”

Paula waited.

“My father kept one box separate.”

“What was in it?”

“I never opened it.”

“Why?”

“Because it had my name on it.”

Paula frowned.

“Your name?”

“Yes.”

“What did it say?”

Jared swallowed.

FOR JARED—IF I DIE BEFORE ELIAS.

The observation room went silent.

Leonard Thompson had prepared something specifically for his son.

Something he expected Jared to receive only if Calder outlived him.

Denise looked at Robert.

“We move now.”

The office on Jefferson had been untouched for years.

Agents found the archive behind a false wall.

Boxes.

Files.

Tapes.

Photographs.

Financial records.

And on a shelf by itself, a black metal case.

JARED.

Denise opened it under evidence protocol.

Inside was a cassette.

A letter.

And a sealed envelope bearing one handwritten sentence.

THE PERSON ELIAS CALDER HAS PROTECTED MOST IS NOT HIMSELF.

I stared at it.

“Then who?”

Denise opened the letter.

Her eyes moved quickly.

Then stopped.

She looked at me.

“What?”

She handed me the page.

Leonard had written the answer twenty-two years earlier.

Elias had spent decades protecting someone whose name had never appeared in the public records.

Someone who had signed no contracts.

Someone who had received no obvious payments.

Someone who had been present when the Parker property was first stolen.

The final line read:

If this ever reaches Jared, he must understand that Elias Calder built everything for his daughter.

I looked at Denise.

“Calder has a daughter?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

She turned the page.

The name written there made Paula gasp.

Because we already knew her.

Click here to continue reading: PART 15:
