Right now, you are leverage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That stopped me.<\/p>\n<p>Sam paced near the back pew.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ll hurt Paula if Susan doesn\u2019t go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Denise turned toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know Martin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen help us understand him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sam stopped pacing.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, his fear seemed larger than his guilt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin doesn\u2019t threaten unless he has already decided what happens if you refuse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does he want?\u201d Denise asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe drive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou gave us the drive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe doesn\u2019t know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould Jared tell him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Sam.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said Jared was going to Arizona.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if Martin stopped him first?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody answered.<\/p>\n<p>Denise began issuing instructions.<\/p>\n<p>Agents would approach the warehouse area without obvious federal vehicles. I would be brought close enough to satisfy whoever was watching but would not enter without surveillance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou will follow instructions immediately,\u201d Denise said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I tell you to stop, you stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I tell you to leave, you leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost said fine again.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, I asked, \u201cAnd if Paula is inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Denise\u2019s expression softened only slightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we get her out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The warehouse district had once housed machine shops and shipping companies. By the time we arrived, half the buildings stood empty. Broken windows reflected the river. Weeds pushed through asphalt. The air smelled of hot metal and stagnant water.<\/p>\n<p>I sat in the back of an unmarked sedan two blocks away.<\/p>\n<p>Denise sat beside me.<\/p>\n<p>Sam had been placed in another vehicle despite his protests.<\/p>\n<p>My phone buzzed.<\/p>\n<p>GET OUT.<\/p>\n<p>I showed Denise.<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>We had already discussed this.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped from the car.<\/p>\n<p>The sunlight was blinding after the dark interior.<\/p>\n<p>Another message arrived.<\/p>\n<p>WALK EAST.<\/p>\n<p>I walked.<\/p>\n<p>Every instinct told me to look for agents.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>A gull screamed above one rooftop.<\/p>\n<p>Somewhere, a loose sheet of metal banged repeatedly in the wind.<\/p>\n<p>My phone buzzed again.<\/p>\n<p>BLUE DOOR.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead, an old loading facility had one door painted a faded industrial blue.<\/p>\n<p>I approached.<\/p>\n<p>A voice came through the phone.<\/p>\n<p>Not a call.<\/p>\n<p>An audio message.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeave the phone outside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Male.<\/p>\n<p>Older.<\/p>\n<p>Calm.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Denise had anticipated this too.<\/p>\n<p>I placed the phone beside the door.<\/p>\n<p>Then I entered.<\/p>\n<p>The warehouse interior was dim.<\/p>\n<p>Rows of old shelving divided the space. Sunlight leaked through gaps in the roof. Dust hung in the beams.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPaula?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My voice echoed.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>I moved farther inside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPaula!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A man stepped from behind a steel column.<\/p>\n<p>He was perhaps in his late sixties. Thin. White hair. A linen shirt too expensive for the setting.<\/p>\n<p>I knew immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin Vale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSusan Miller.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice matched the recording.<\/p>\n<p>I had imagined monsters while reading Sam\u2019s letter.<\/p>\n<p>Martin looked like someone who might chair a charity dinner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere\u2019s my daughter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSafe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShow me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou declared me dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He smiled slightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot personally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cComforting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve become sharper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou wouldn\u2019t know. We\u2019ve never met.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, I\u2019ve seen you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words chilled me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhotographs?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou watched my family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy daughter was nine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat part was regrettable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you practice sentences like that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His smile disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSam should never have involved himself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA worker died because your company stole money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSam told you that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSam always preferred morality after the danger had already passed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hated that Martin could say something true.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere\u2019s Paula?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded toward the rear.<\/p>\n<p>A door opened.<\/p>\n<p>Paula appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Her hands were not tied.<\/p>\n<p>That confused me.<\/p>\n<p>She walked toward us slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you hurt?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid they take you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot exactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>Martin watched me understand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou came voluntarily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paula shook her head quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Jared told me we needed to leave town. Then Martin\u2019s people intercepted us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is Jared?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked toward Martin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe became inconvenient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means Jared believed inherited information made him powerful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He walked closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis father had a similar weakness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeonard worked for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeonard worked with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Jared found his files.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen used them to blackmail Sam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin\u2019s expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout authorization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re offended because he committed unauthorized blackmail?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe disrupted arrangements that had remained stable for twenty years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paula moved closer to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, we need to do what he says.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does he want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe other copy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Martin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou already know about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSam is sentimental. Sentimental men keep insurance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think I know where it is?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Sam would tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe barely told me why he disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin watched me closely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat may be true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A noise sounded behind us.<\/p>\n<p>Footsteps.<\/p>\n<p>Two men emerged from the shadowed aisle.<\/p>\n<p>One held Jared by the arm.<\/p>\n<p>His face was bruised. Blood had dried near his mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Paula gasped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>Then at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSusan, don\u2019t give him anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is the first intelligent thing Jared has said all day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at Jared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou declared me dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can explain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, you can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t mean for it to go that far.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou forged records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI needed access to the accounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou stole from me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was going to fix it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paula made a broken sound.<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what he told you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said once his business recovered, everything would be restored.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat part of my death was supposed to be restored?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked down.<\/p>\n<p>Martin seemed almost bored.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFamily guilt is fascinating, but we have limited time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He glanced toward the roof.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause federal investigators are nearby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart skipped.<\/p>\n<p>He knew.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen you\u2019re finished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He smiled again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are cautious because you are here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He had counted on it.<\/p>\n<p>Of course he had.<\/p>\n<p>Martin gestured toward Jared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell Susan what you found in Leonard\u2019s papers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jared stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>Martin\u2019s voice cooled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jared swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father had copies of everything from Delaney Municipal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNames.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat names?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople paid through false contracts. Officials. Inspectors. Developers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin kept accounts overseas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin\u2019s expression hardened, but he let him continue.<\/p>\n<p>Jared looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought I could use the files to get money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou thought blackmail was a business plan?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was desperate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou always use that word after you choose something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He flinched.<\/p>\n<p>Paula began crying again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew he was pressuring Dad,\u201d she said. \u201cI didn\u2019t know how much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The honesty made me angrier than denial would have.<\/p>\n<p>She wiped her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought Dad abandoned us once. When he came back, I wanted to believe there was a reason. Jared said if we helped keep his identity quiet, he would protect him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you handed him my records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd forged my signature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word broke something final between us.<\/p>\n<p>Not love.<\/p>\n<p>Love was more stubborn than that.<\/p>\n<p>Trust.<\/p>\n<p>Trust made a quieter sound when it died.<\/p>\n<p>Martin checked his watch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe drive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t have it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know where it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re a poor liar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was declared dead for three years without noticing. Apparently I\u2019m also poor at detecting liars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He studied me.<\/p>\n<p>Then smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand why Sam never forgot you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t speak about my marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy? He spent two decades speaking about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That caught me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin nodded toward Paula.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour husband followed your life more closely than he admitted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Paula.<\/p>\n<p>She seemed equally confused.<\/p>\n<p>Martin continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had people watch you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sam\u2019s letter had said he drove past occasionally.<\/p>\n<p>Martin was saying more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he never trusted that leaving had protected you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why didn\u2019t he come home?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I reminded him what would happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou threatened us for twenty years?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot continuously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His casualness made me want to strike him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI only needed to remind him occasionally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paula covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Jared whispered, \u201cJesus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Again that phrase.<\/p>\n<p>Enough.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone in my life seemed to have known enough.<\/p>\n<p>Except me.<\/p>\n<p>A distant sound came from outside.<\/p>\n<p>A vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>Martin\u2019s eyes moved toward the wall.<\/p>\n<p>One of his men touched an earpiece.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re moving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin cursed.<\/p>\n<p>He grabbed Paula\u2019s arm.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped between them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes met mine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou misunderstand your position.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I finally understand it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I shouted as loudly as I could.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDENISE!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everything happened at once.<\/p>\n<p>Martin\u2019s man lunged toward me.<\/p>\n<p>Jared shoved him.<\/p>\n<p>Paula screamed.<\/p>\n<p>A crash sounded near the loading entrance.<\/p>\n<p>Federal agents poured into the warehouse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFEDERAL AGENTS! HANDS!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin dragged Paula backward.<\/p>\n<p>I followed.<\/p>\n<p>A gun appeared in his hand.<\/p>\n<p>The sight of it erased every thought except one.<\/p>\n<p>My daughter.<\/p>\n<p>Martin pressed the weapon against Paula\u2019s side.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBack away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Agents froze.<\/p>\n<p>Denise appeared behind a support beam.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He smiled tightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo they finally sent somebody competent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet her go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Susan tells me where Sam hid the copy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin\u2019s eyes narrowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A voice came from above us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, she won\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sam.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone looked up.<\/p>\n<p>He stood on the metal catwalk overlooking the warehouse floor.<\/p>\n<p>In one hand was another flash drive.<\/p>\n<p>Martin\u2019s expression changed for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>Not irritation.<\/p>\n<p>Fear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sam looked down at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou wanted the copy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin tightened his grip on Paula.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBring it down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sam held the drive over the railing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou let her go first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sam smiled without humor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty years ago, you taught me what happens when I follow your instructions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He opened his fingers.<\/p>\n<p>The drive fell.<\/p>\n<p>Martin moved instinctively.<\/p>\n<p>Just enough.<\/p>\n<p>Paula twisted away.<\/p>\n<p>Denise shouted.<\/p>\n<p>Agents surged forward.<\/p>\n<p>A shot cracked through the warehouse.<\/p>\n<p>Paula fell.<\/p>\n<p>I screamed her name.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=10118\">Click here to continue reading: PART 7: The Gunshot Missed Paula, but Jared\u2019s Confession Exposed the Choice That Turned My False Death Into a Family Betrayal<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Denise arrived at the church eleven minutes after Robert called her.
